Die Videoarbeit spielt mit der Geheimnis­haftigkeit von Behausungen, in diesem Fall: eines Schiffs. Mit fester Kameraeinstellung wird das Wrack der M/S Cabo Santa Maria gefilmt, die 1968 auf der Kapverdischen Insel Bõa Vista strandete und seitdem vor sich hin rostet. Das Schiff war auf dem Weg nach Südamerika, doch alle Versuche, es wieder flott zu bekommen, scheiterten. Dabei ging eine aussergewöhnliche Fracht verloren, die erst Jahre später im Meer wiedergefunden wurde.  Das Geheimnis der Havarie wird übersetzt in ein anderes, fiktives Geheimnis, das ebenso viele Fragen aufwirft wie das tatsächliche.

«Die langsame Zersetzung des Wracks bildet das Hauptmotiv für eine fiktive Erzählung, die sich in den Untertiteln des Videos entwickelt: detailliert schildert der Text eine Schlägerei zwischen drei Männern, die sich auf der Brücke ereignet und tödlich endet. Die Meeres­brandung, die zwischen Zeitlupe und normaler Laufgeschwindigkeit wechselt, korres­pondiert mit den Atemzügen des Betrach­ters, der sich, sobald er sich auf die Erzäh­lung einlässt, entsprechend den Wellen­geräuschen verändern wird. Das Motiv des gestran­deten Schiffes wird zu einem Gehäuse mit einem Geheimnis, das wenige kennen.» Sabine Schaschl, frühere Direktorin Kunsthaus Baselland, seit 2013 Direktorin Museum Haus Konstruktiv Zürich

The video work plays with the mysteriousness of dwellings, in this case: a ship. With a fixed camera angle, the wreck of the M/S Cabo Santa Maria is filmed, which stranded on the Cape Verdean island of Bõa Vista in 1968 and has been rusting away ever since. The ship was on its way to South America, but all attempts to get it afloat failed. In the process, an extraordinary cargo was lost, which was only recovered years later in the sea. The mystery of the accident is translated into another, fictional mystery that raises as many questions as the real one.

“The slow disinte­gration of the wreck by the surf is the main motif for a story that develops in the subtitles. The text describes in detail a fight between three men on the bridge of a ship. The image of the surf, which alter­nates between slow and normal speed, corresponds with the breathing of the viewer, which alter­nate according to the sound of the waves, if he/she is willing to let in the described story. The motif of the stranded ship becomes a cipher of time­less­ness, a shell with a secret, known only to a few.” Sabine Schaschl, former director Kunsthaus Baselland, since 2013 director Museum Haus Konstruktiv Zurich
